I am a senior at Wilmington University who is trying to compile data for my senior thesis. I am trying to determine if there is a correlation between low self-esteem and quality of life for those who suffer from mild to severe hearing loss. Thanks for your help!

Well my hearing is pretty lousy, and it does kinda make me feel like I’m not as good as people who don’t need every other sentence repeated
.
There is definitely a relation between hearing loss and depression not sure if low self esteem is the right word. Yes when older people start to lose their hearing they often regress socially and stop going to group events or going out at all as things get harder and harder for them to enjoy due to their hearing loss. You will probably find differences in people who lost their hearing when they were older versus those who were born with it. I was born with hearing loss and grew up very shy. Not necessarily a problem with self esteem just quiet and reserved. I made plenty of friends in small groups and then was able to learn to cope in larger group situations if I knew some of the people there well. This is a great thesis idea – good luck!
In older people who lose their hearing they do lose some quality of life because people stop talking to them on the same level—it’s more superficial because it’s harder for people with normal hearing to keep repeating themselves, so they cut things short. Hearing aids don’t help with all types of hearing lose, so senior citizens with bad hearing get less and less quality time with others and to enjoy things like watching TV, music, movies, etc.
I don’t know if I’d say there is a correlation between this and low self-esteem, though. I think the correlation would more likely be between hearing loss and depression.
WHAT?? WHAT WAS THAT??
I don’t think so. And if you were to say "suffer from hearing loss", to anyone in the Deaf community, they would be very offended. Any person who views themself as being Deaf does not see a disability, but they see themselves as part of a very strong community. Perhaps individuals outside of the community have low self-esteem, but I have never known one person with hearing loss to be that way, and I’ve known hundreds.
