I’m hella paranoid about my hearing. My audiologist says it’s fine, but I want to join the Marines and yeah. I looked at the requirements and all, and my test says I’m in the normal range, but can you still have inner ear damage if you don’t have hearing loss? I heard that military tests your hearing to make sure you can hear and to see if you have inner ear damage because it will mess up your balance.

People who suffer from hearing loss have been helped with hearing aids for a long time. Basically how a hearing aid works is by using tiny microphones to take soft sounds and amplify them louder. The device works be taking sound and transforms it to a digital signal, then it would take that data and send it to a speaker were it is once again turned back into sound.
When setting up these microphones one has to take into account how much hearing loss a person has and the type of lifestyle that they lead. For example if you are a person who is around noises of high frequency, or if you live in a quiet type of environment then that is how the microphones need to be set so that you can hear the types of sounds for your lifestyle .
Audiologists would need to ask these questions to be able to set up your hearing aid properly. The technology in a hearing aid basically breaks down to 3 basic types of signals that the hearing aid would receive and convert.
The first would be a analog hearing aid which is the least expensive of the three. The analog hearing aid would have the volume and other requirements set by the audiologist. They would then send in the settings to the factory and a custom hearing aid would be made for you. It would come with a control for you to set the amplification or it would be set automatically.
Analog programmable is also a type of circuitry that can be used. This type of circuitry would be programmed by a computer, this works much greater than the analog hearing aids. This system uses sound that is captured and set into different programs for a diverse set of listening conditions. A remote control can be used by a person to pick which program would work best in any given situation.
The most advanced of the hearing aids which are also the most expensive are the digital programmable ones. They use a circuitry that is called Digital Sound Processing or DSP for short. The hearing aid uses a small chip which would analyze and process all the sound data produced before it gets amplified into your ear.
The chip works by taking billions of digital codes that are numbered, then classifying all the sounds so to give them a correct setting. This data is then changed into sound which is then sent into the ear. This hearing aid has the ability to detect feedback by using it’s frequencies to identify and eliminate it. What makes these hearing aids so nice is that all the adjustments are made automatically with little done by the person who wears it.
Today hearing aids are so much better than they were years ago. The person who suffers from hearing loss now has so many options to choose from. So if you ever ask yourself, “what makes this hearing aid work” your answer would be technology
